María Fernanda Espinosa is actively engaged in global initiatives focused on peace, security, multilateralism, social equality, and environmental sustainability. As a board member of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC) and co-chair of the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN), she promotes international collaboration among civil society organizations and between governments to tackle global challenges, such as climate change, armed conflicts, and social inequality. Additionally, her work with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) focuses on overcoming cultural and religious polarization.

As President of the Cities Alliance Assembly, she advocates for sustainable development and poverty reduction in rapidly growing cities. She also advises the World Future Council, which promotes fair and sustainable policies globally. Her involvement in these organizations reflects her commitment to advancing multilateralism and global governance.
Additionally, she serves as an UBUNTU advisor for United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), is a founding member of the United Nations Studies Centre at the University of Buckingham, works with the Robert Bosch Academy, and is part of the RISE Cities program at the BMW Herbert Quandt Foundation, where she promotes resilient, smart, and equitable cities. These roles underscore her dedication to driving sustainable and equitable solutions to pressing global challenges.

Ms. Espinosa also plays a key role in promoting global peace and security through her involvement in various international organizations. As a board member of the International Crisis Group, she helps prevent deadly conflicts and fosters policies that promote a more peaceful world. This organization combines expert field research with global policy engagement to provide independent analysis and advice on preventing and managing conflicts. Furthermore, as a member of the Human Security Advisory Board of the UN Trust Fund for Human Security, she advises on strategic direction and promotes approaches that protect the lives, dignity, and livelihoods of the most vulnerable.

She also serves as an advisor to the Advisory Committee of the Club Madrid, where she works alongside former presidents and prime ministers from around the world to improve inclusive democratic practices and enhance global quality of life. Through this platform, dialogue, connection, and the strengthening of public policies are promoted to address critical issues such as inclusion, sustainable development, and peace at both national and international levels.
Her commitment to peace and security is also reflected in her participation on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Futures of Science at the International Science Council and as a member of the World Academy of Art and Science. Both organizations work to integrate science into international policy development and address global challenges, such as peace and human rights, in close collaboration with the United Nations and other global partners.

María Fernanda Espinosa is deeply committed to promoting equality and social justice on a global scale. As a member and Executive Director of the Group of Women Leaders for Change and Inclusion (GWLvoices), she works to increase women’s participation in multilateralism and enhance the global welfare of women. She is also part of the Advisory Committee of the World Humanitarian Forum, a platform that brings together leaders from various sectors to address global agendas and foster public-private cooperation on humanitarian and development issues.

She is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Generation Equality Forum, contributing to accelerating the implementation of the gender equality commitments established in 1995. Her involvement in the Political Advisory Panel of the Universal Health Coverage 2030 Movement (UHC2030) highlights her focus on social justice, advocating for universal health coverage that is fair and sustainable, and guiding health policies globally.


In addition, she participates in the Global Network of Women Leaders, which includes former and current heads of state, ministers, and high-level representatives, and is a member of the Advisory Council of the G100 Club, which promotes gender equality and the substantial participation of women in all areas of life. Her work in these organizations underscores her dedication to advancing gender equality, human rights, and the empowerment of women worldwide.

Ms. Espinosa also plays a pivotal role in combating the climate crisis through her leadership in various international organizations. As co-chair of the Climate Governance Commission of the Global Governance Forum, she promotes global governance solutions to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C or less, in line with the Carbon Law. Additionally, as a commissioner of the Global Commission on the Economy of Water (GCEW), she works to advance climate and water justice, influencing policies and business strategies to ensure global water sustainability.

She is also a member of the Strategic Council of the Scientific Panel for the Amazon, contributing to the conservation and sustainable development of the Amazon, and the World Sustainability Forum. She co-chairs the Debt Relief for a Green and Inclusive Recovery Project, which seeks innovative solutions to the sovereign debt crisis and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Her influence extends to the Advisory Committee of COP28 in the United Arab Emirates and the Advisory Committee of COP29 in Azerbaijan, where she provides guidance on collaborative and transformative climate actions.

As an Ambassador of the Common Home of Humanity, she promotes a global governance model that safeguards the safe operating space of the Earth System, essential for humanity’s survival and well-being. Her commitment to the environment also includes her role as a commissioner at the Our Common Air Secretariat and as an advisor to the World Center for Sustainable Urban Food, where she addresses crucial challenges related to air quality and food security in urban contexts.
